FROM HEBSGAARD'S TREASURE TROVE

Glasmuseet Ebeltoft has just opened FROM HEBSGAARD'S TREASURE TROVE - a comprehensive exhibition...

Glazier Per Steen Hebsgaard has put his finger print on numerous Danish – and several international – commissioned works made in glass. In airports, libraries, churches and several public spaces – whereever glass is involved, he has left his mark. According to Per Hebsgaard, nothing is impossible, when it comes to transforming an artist’s idea into glass. Never-the-less, each task is a challenge to the material and to the skills of the craftsman.

Among Hebsgaard's most well known works are “Cosmic Space” made for Randers Art Museum (1997) and the North Atlantic Brygge in Copenhagen (2007) in collaboration with Tróndur Patursson and a 7.5 meter high tower for Fredericia Brewery (1989) made in collaboration with world famous Danish artist, Bjørn Nørgaard – an impressive work consisting of more than 5000 individually shaped pieces of glass in an abundance of colours.

For the exhibition in Ebeltoft, Tróndur Patursson has created an amazing "Cosmic Space" with painted walls of glass and mirrors on the floor and ceiling. Peter Brandes - another "super star" in Danish art has also built a separate, darkened room for a series of stained glass windows with religious motifs. Among his most important commissions, is the decoration of a chapel in Roskilde, which will be opened at the end of October 2010.

The exhibition presents some of the finest works from Hebsgaard’s workshop, such as Erik A. Frandsen’s 5-meter high boxing glove, along with new works, created especially for the exhibition and models of some of the commissioned works, made at Hebsgaard’s workshop. The exhibition also features a short film with English texts about Per Hebsgaard.

Exhibition period: Until 1st May 2011.

The garden

In connection with the exhibition, artist and garden architect Kjeld Slot has totally re-designed the museum’s garden taking the classical building from 1921 and the new wing from 2006 into respect. The basic principle of the design is a grid, which defines a plain and simple system of square plots: all in all 13 (9m2) flowerbeds with varying plants for example parsley/tagetis, cauliflower/thistles, Rose de Recht, herbs and Himalaya birch, and three larger squares with meadow grasses. Throughout the summer the garden will develop from week to week, as the various flowerbeds spring into life.

Extended programme with activities

During the exhibition period there will be many opportunities to learn more about glass and horticulture. The museum has put together a wide range of activities centered around glass and horticulture. On 5 separate Sundays from April to September, professional flower decorators will create beautiful bouquets, in July, Kjeld Slot will give a guided tour in the garden with good advice about garden design and in September, guests are invited to taste delicious home brewed Aquavit using herbs. Every first Sunday of the month there is a free guided tour of the exhibition and garden.

INNER VIEW - New exhibition at Glasmuseet

The 35 year old Japanese artist, Masayo Odahashi, has already achieved international recognition...

Masayo Odahashi finds her motifs in everyday life. Her preferred motifs are young women, sitting quietly alone or in pairs with their faces looking down. From time to time they are accompanied by the figure of a rabbit’s head, inspired by traditional Japanese fairytales, in which the rabbit symbolises the unspoiled human being. The sculptures are characterized by a meditative calmness and an intensity, which spellbinds the viewer.

Masayo Odahashi creates her pieces using the lost-wax technique. She pours glass into a form made of plaster, created from sketches and a wax model, which is melted away to give room for the glass. After this, she ’paints’ on face, hair and hands with a thin layer of mixed glass powder.

The title of the exhibition, ”Inner View”, is the artist’s own words for describing what her work is about.

Masayo Odahashis works are exhibited at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft until 13th June 2010.

STATUS 80 - FINN LYNGGAARD

Monday 11th January - on his 80th birthday - Glasmuseet Ebeltoft opened the exhibition "Status 80"...

For forty years, Finn Lynggaard has enthusiastically explored the vast possibilities with glass as a material. Today, his beautiful flower decorated glass bowls, vases, and plates are modern classics. He is renowned throughout the world and among his admirers are HM the Queen, who is the owner of several of his works, such as ”The Four Seasons”.

The exhibition ”Status 80” presents older ceramic works and painting as well as a multitude of works in glass: from light hearted sculptures like ”Mickey Mouse on a Pedestal with Butterflies” (1991-92) to the classic poppy decorated bowls.

Finn Lynggaard has had immense influence on Danish and international glass. Together with a small group of legendary artists working with glass, for example Harvey Littleton (USA), Finn Lynggaard was one of the pioneers. As one of the exponents for the ’Studio glass movement’ throughout the 1970’s these artists challenged the traditional way of working with glass, which had been connected to large glass factories.

ANIMA ANIMUS

The first collaborative exhibition between Emma Woffenden and Tord Boontje was opened at Glasmuseet...

For the first time, Emma Woffenden and her partner Tord Boontje are exhibiting together. Their exhibition, Anima Animus, explores the creative dialogue between the couple, who sometimes work in tandem yet always remain distinct from one another.

Tord Boontje is a designer who also works with the international textile company Kvadrat. His new range of fabrics for Kvadrat, which was launched on 1st October, is part of the exhibition. Emma Woffenden is an artist and originally trained as a glassmaker. She has shown work in the first “Young Glass” competition and exhibition at Glasmuseet in 1987 and she was also among the 20 artists who exhibited in the “20 Years On” exhibition to mark the opening of the new museum wing in 2006.

Boontje and Woffenden have discussed, collaborated and disagreed for sixteen years. They share similarities in the materials they use, concepts they explore and their approach to process. Despite this, this exhibition illustrates they both clearly express opposing points of view towards the same subjects.

The show presents a selection of the artists’ earlier work, which they created individually, and new, collaborative installations. In doing this, it attempts to show where their respective creative worlds meet.
