The Danish glass artist Pipaluk Lake occupies a unique position on the international glass scene. With her experimental works she constantly challenges the expressive and sculptural potential of the material.
Her solo exhibition DROPS, which opens at Glasmuseet Ebeltoft on Saturday, 19th March 2011, will show why her works are incomparable and arouse great interest in and outside Denmark.
Pipaluk Lake approaches glass as if it were a completely new material which constantly needs to be explored. Its fluid consistency, in particular, is of great interest to her as a form-giving factor. Her work is based on experiments with window glass and metals, which are placed in a furnace. During heating, gravity becomes an important factor in the shaping process where copper, brass and metal have a great influence, and the work becomes three dimensional as the glass is softened and draped over the metal threads. Different materials merge and their mutually transforming qualities in the hot furnace is the turning point for projects, which reveal the material’s hidden potential and sculptural qualities. In her latest works, Pipaluk Lake strives to make visible the forces which have shaped the glass.
As a new dogma she has chosen to incorporate sustainable methods, on both a practical and a technical level. The drop is an image of the small unit, which – if it insists - can make a difference on a small scale. The title DROPS can be interpreted in many ways, and refers to work, which has a ”drop-formed” shape, but also to the action of letting go or to let fall.
Some of the new works for this exhibition have been created at the Danish Art Workshops (SVK) at Gammel Dok in Copenhagen. The results are monumental pieces that demonstrate her mastery of the material as well as form and expression.
