WORKS BY GROUND BREAKING ARTISTS AT GLASMUSEET EBELTOFT

5th September - 12th November 2008

On 5th September, Glasmuseet Ebeltoft opens an exclusive exhibition with a selection of works from the permanent collection. ”Breaking Ground” is the title of the exhibition, which presents works made by three ground breaking artists: Kyohei Fujita (Japan), Åsa Brandt (Sweden) and Dale Chihuly (USA).

Work by the three artists is presented in three different rooms on the 1st floor in the old building. Kyohei Fujita’s elegant golden boxes are presented on black lacquered plinths, while Åsa Brandt’s coloured universe is characterized by two of her famous joyous glass kites. The largest room will present a selection of Dale Chihuly’s strong coloured organic works in a dark, intimate atmosphere.

Together with a group of glass artists, who are now legendary, among those Harvey Littleton (USA) and Finn Lynggaard (founder of Glasmuseet Ebeltoft), Kyohei Fujita, Dale Chihuly and Åsa Brandt all made new conquests in glass as an art form in different parts of the world during the 1960s. From this pioneer spirit and urge to explore and experiment with glass, the studio glass movement emerged as a strong, international community among artists all over the world.

With the emergence of studio glass, the framwork for traditional glassmaking, which had so far belonged to large glass factories such as Orrefors, Kosta Boda and Holmegaard, were suddenly opened. With the technological developments, which took place in the 1950’s and 1960’s, new possibilities emerged for working artistically with glass in small, one-man studios, thus opening new paths for glass as an art form.

Glasmuseet’s permanent collection of contemporary, international studio glass, is unique. The collection contains more than 1500 works, created by 600 artists from more than 50 nations. Selected works from the collection are presented at the museum in thematic exhibitions, which change at intervals throughout the year.
